July birthstone: ruby
Ruby is July’s only birthstone — vivid red, durable, and one of the most coveted colored gemstones in the world. See the ruby guide for color tiers, origin (Burma vs Mozambique), and the lead-glass-filling treatment to avoid.

Everyday wear comfortably wants a 7+. Below 7, choose settings that protect the stone (bezel, halo) and store the piece carefully.
At Mohs 9, ruby is hardy enough for daily wear in any setting. A July-birthstone ring will outlive its setting; pendants and earrings are similarly forever.
Choosing for a gift
- A first birthstone necklace — a bezel-set ruby pendant, 0.10–0.30 ct. Color quality matters more than size at this scale.
- A milestone birthday — earrings or a three-stone ring with ruby center.
- The 40th anniversary — ruby is the traditional gift. A ring or pendant in the “pigeon’s blood” color range is the hero piece.
Insist on the report
Any ruby over about 0.5 ct should come with a lab report (GIA, GRS, SSEF, AGL) disclosing treatment status. “Heat only” is the trade standard and fine. “Lead glass filled” is a hard pass for a gift you want to last.
