September birthstone: sapphire

Sapphire is September’s only birthstone. While blue is the default association, sapphire comes in every color except red — pink, yellow, green, white, padparadscha. See the sapphire guide for the full color palette and origin discussion.

Choosing for a gift

• Traditional — vivid blue (Ceylon cornflower is the everyday luxury baseline).
• Distinctive — Montana teal sapphire. Fully traceable, ethically sourced, distinctively colored.
• Unexpected — pink, yellow, or padparadscha (pink-orange) sapphire. Same hardness, same trade reputation, different visual statement.

A September-birthstone ring is durable enough to wear every day forever. Pendants and earrings are similarly worry-free.

Insist on the report

For any sapphire over about 0.5 ct: ask for a lab report disclosing origin and treatment. Heat treatment is standard and fine; lattice or fissure filling is a hard pass.
